"Quest for a Dream - A Life Committed to Progress" is not merely uniquely structured in style, form and presentation but provides information that is very relevant in terms of what our youth and individuals of humble origins can achieve in a short stint of time, if one is focused and if one believes in a dream; believes in setting goals and working diligently and unrelentingly to acquire these aspirations.

The book encompasses a number of tributes to Dr. Buchanan for his kind heartedness, his contributions in local communities, his dedication to Jamaica's and the world's poorer classes and disadvantaged, his service and accomplishments in one of Jamaica's major political parties, the PNP (People's National Party) where he was nominated and slated to acquire the position of candidate and MP in waiting, after serving in the Party for close to three decades,(for the constituency of Eastern Westmoreland, Jamaica, a constituency held for years by former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Hon. P. J. Patterson). He was to replace the then Prime Minister immediately after the latter retired. Dr. Buchanan served the people of the constituency from his youthful days for about three decades!

Shortly after Dr. Buchanan got the approval by the people of the Eastern Westmoreland Constituency, the then Prime Minister of Jamaica, The Hon. P.J. Patterson and the People's National Party (PNP), he died suddenly from a respiratory complication and a blood clot.

After reading excerpts of the eloquent speeches he made during his short life span, gleaning information of his scholarly and academic prowess, the personal sacrifices he made of family and self in serving his local countryman and woman, his steadfastness in serving and improving the lot of his countryman and woman and the less advantaged, the coming to grips of the reality of death by his mother, Joyce Buchanan, his brothers, Milton and Luther Buchanan and sister, Andrea Buchanan, that this genius has accomplished his dreams and has passed on the baton - all outlined in the book, one cannot but conclude that Jamaica, and the world at large, have had a great loss in the passing of Dr. Norman Buchanan.

It is in reading "Quest for a Dream - A life Committed to Progress" that you will have a fuller sense of the accomplishments, deeds and will of a young intellectual who has indeed, "gone too soon". Read the book, you will enjoy it. The book is simple to read and would serve as a great Christmas and New Year's gift to family, friends and associates.

I want to convey my deepest condolences to his wife, Judith, and his three children, mother, Mrs. Buchanan, sister, Andrea, his brothers , Luther and Milton, uncles, aunts and other relatives.

Norman   By Joshua Spencer

Norman, the Gibraltor
Norman, the innovator and leader
A people person and champion for the poor
But our Norman is now, no more.

Why should the good hearted
Be snatched away
Even before he gets a bay?
We'll never know
But Norman Buchanan will always be remembered, as our champion.

His captivating, smiling face lit up the darkest dungeon.
Inherently endowed with a steadfastness, uprightness and drive
To keep the disadvantaged and underprivileged alive
Ignited and energized, his sole motivation to survive
To succeed and nurture the feeblest and weakest of the human heart.

Oh Norman, we'll remember you always
The days you coached us, to be our best
And all the rest
With all the challenges and the tests.

The greatest hurt, we feel
Is how disappointed you must be
For not having the chance to let the poor and the weak, have their jubilee.

But who knows, Norman
The Beyond must have a plan
Probably had we the insight, we'd understand.

Couldn't Have Been There

My friend died and at his funeral,
I couldn't have been.
Oh what a grief and burden I feel
Oh what pain I squeal
For to me, this is an aweful deal
My good friend died and I
Couldn't have been there

Oh Norman and relatives
I indulge your forgiveness
How could it have been
That at this your farewell
Your friend and comrade bestows his absence?
My good friend died and I
Couldn't have been there

Oh my good friend died and I
couldn't have been there
My pecuniary slides
Cause me, to this land, to be 'immobiled' and abide
Had me tied to Canada
I couldn't have been at your graveside
Oh, my good friend and comrade died and I
Couldn't have been there

Norman Buchanan and relatives,
Oh, I ask your understanding
Norman, you were a great individual,
I should have been strong
I should have stood up to the bangarang
Be in Jamaica
Be in Lennox,Bigwoods, Westmoreland.
Be at your graveside
Bearing your casket
Giving you my last respect
Oh, I'm sorry
There can be no excuses
Your friend and comrade
Joshua Spencer, should have been there.

My daughters told me
How much our acquaintances lament and comment
"Where is your dad?"
"Where is Norman's friend?"
"Is he sick or didn't he get the news?", they mused.
My good friend and comrade died
I was no where to be found
My good friend died and I
Couldn't have been there.

I just couldn't have responded to this tragic call
I cried, I bawl
When I read of his death
My daughters in Jamaica did not call me yet.
I said to myself, I must have been sleeping
Oh Beyond, I only hope I have been dreaming.
But the dawn of day, shoved my hope a bay.
My good friend, Norman has really passed away

I remembered at my wedding, in ninetytwo
My friend, Norman, now dead
Sent me a speech and said
I am abroad but my brother
I must come a yard
To Jamaica, to your wedding
To increase your your happiness, my presence I must bring
But my good friend died and I
Couldn't have been there

TRIBUTE TO MY LATE, GREAT BROTHER. By Mr. Milton Buchanan
OCTOBER 1, 2005

Norman Buck, my brother, my friend, my comrade this is a chapter in your life I never ever wanted to read. I remember you telling me how proud you were when I led from the front when Luther had his near call. You said you would never be able to deal with it. Now we are forced to be the dealing with your loss.

You often reminded me that when I was born how you touched me in my head only to be 'raxed up' by Daddy, "Bwoy Yu Gwine Kill Me Boy?!". Since that first touch many things have happened. We have grown to be 'big' men, still very close and as the “Big Man” in the Family, I give you credit for many things WE have done.

You have never said 'no'. You lead from the front whether it was for Mommy, Carol, Andrea, Luther or me.

We shared a lot of things. We both played cricket for our schools. We both played table tennis for our schools. The only thing you never had the pleasure of doing is going to Cornwall College. (It’s a Munro Vs Cornwall thing). We Went out together, we had fun. You left me stranded in Darliston, hungry because of politics. You left me to drive home Mommy's car when I could barely do it because you had to go play cricket for Stone-edge and Cottage Cricket team. I waited for you, outside in the car, when you went to deal with matters of a different kind. You told me I had failed my Common Entrance exams when I had actually passed it. As a Teenager, you showed me the way around mommy’s curfew hours all in the spirit that we spent a life time sharing.

It was from those early days that I became your little tail following you to the cricket matches, following you to the Political meetings. When you were Chairman of the Westmoreland PNP YO and I was hiding away from school to be with you on weekends while we walk the walk of being vanguard for socialism. You preached the ideology of scientific socialism. I listened and was a convert. Lenin, Karl Marx, Stalin, Fidel Castro, Michael Manley, Hugh Buchanan, the revolutionary Che’ and many more were the names and whose philosophy you often quoted. You spoke of being 1st in work, 1st in discipline, 1st in study. I have had a few 1st in my life thanks to your inspiration. The roads were lonely, the nights were cold but out there we were fighting the battle against imperialism and inequality, injustice and poverty.

You taught me commitment. That’s why I go wherever duty beckons without a murmur. I supported your mission. I know you would give your best, that’s the only thing you gave. Politics was your first, second and third love because it meant service to your people. The equipment at your practice was the best because only the best was good enough for you. You reasoned out everything because you said you were the best. I will not challenge you. Because whether it was a game of Scrabble, Table Tennis, or Draught or Chinese checkers you beat us (MOST OF THE TIME). I have a few up on you. But you would never stop at being defeated. You believed that good conquered evil at all times. You love life and you never planned for death. I quote, "Bulla, I man plan to live not to die" end of Quote.

Now I wish to God you had control over that because I would not be mourning now. Norman, you were a master strategist. You never failed to impress. Always very impressive in your analysis, it being sports, politics or any matter of great concerns. Bethel Town Parish council Elections you told me the victory margin you were dead on. You plan and ran Luther Buck's and the Late Singer Brown's campaigns like clock work. You were just brilliant. You were a great driver, an excellent orator even with your obvious lisp tongue. When I would turn to you and say to you”BUCKY yu good” You in your little conceited style would say “its’ not by chance my little brother its’ not by chance”…..

You wanted to serve your people, your people wanted you to serve them. Norman, you are an icon. Your work was not in vain. You loved your family, we loved you too. From that first touch in my head November 1st 1969 to that last hand shake on Saturday the 10th September 2005. We shared many things. Some I’ll take to my grave also. Good laughs, big fuss, many favors, deep secrets. I was prepared to share many more with you. Like Luther, I wanted just an extra mile just that extra mile to walk with you again but IF IN GOD’S EYES you HAD COMPLETED THE ASSIGNMENTS HE GAVE TO you and he was ready to call you home, I have no choice but to accept that you are smelling the roses of your toil.

I love you Norman Seymour Washington Buchanan. Rest in peace, my brother. At long last you are resting. Too soon I may want to think, but like you would say "some things you cannot change!!”

BIG BUCK MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE AND LIGHT PERPETUALLY SHINE UPON YOU.

PJ's successor dies from pneumonia
MARK CUMMINGS, Observer staff reporter
Monday, September 19, 2005

BUCHANAN. dies at age 42

MONTEGO BAY, St James - Medical doctor Norman Buchanan, the man who was last month selected by the People's National Party (PNP) to replace Prime Minister P J Patterson as candidate in Eastern Westmoreland, has died.
Buchanan, 42, died from pneumonia in the Cornwall Regional Hospital shortly before 1:00 pm yesterday.

He was hospitalised just over a week ago with respiratory problems but up to Saturday morning he was said to be stable.

His condition, however, got worse late Saturday, his uncle, Senator Noel Monteith who was at his bedside hours before he died, told the Observer.

"I left his bedside shortly after one o' clock this morning (yesterday) and his condition had really gotten worse," said Monteith, the PNP vice-chairman for Eastern Westmoreland.
He said that while Buchanan will be sadly missed, residents in the constituency would have to come to terms with the reality that he is no longer around.

"He had really endeared himself to the people; he had an abundance of love and the constituents will be very sad, but as a Christian, we will have to accept the will of the Lord," the constituency vice-chairman said.

Buchanan, born August 19, 1963, was schooled at Munro College, Mannings High School, Wolmers, and the Trade Union Education Institute.

He later studied at the University of Miami, University of California at Berkeley School of Optometry, and Yale School of Medicine, before returning to Jamaica in 2001 to set up his private practice - See More Eye Care.

But even while he was studying overseas, Buchanan would travel to Jamaica to participate in the PNP's campaign activities.

Buchanan, who is also the nephew of water and housing minister Donald Buchanan, and the brother of councillor for the Leamington division in Eastern Westmoreland, Luther Buchanan, has been working for the PNP for more than two decades.

Buchanan is survived by his wife Judith and three children.

WESTERN BUREAU:

DR. NORMAN Buchanan, who was chosen to represent the Eastern Westmoreland constituency after Prime Minister P.J Patterson steps down from representational politics, died yesterday in the Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay after battling a brief illness.

His brother, Luther Buchanan, Westmoreland parish councillor for the Leamington division told The Gleaner yesterday that his brother fell gravely ill two weeks ago and died as a result of complications from pneumonia and a blood clot in one of his lungs.

A FULL LIFE

"My brother lived a full life. He was a disciplined man who did not tolerate foolishness and he loved to serve his community," said Councillor Buchanan.

Dr. Buchanan was elected on August 9 to succeed Mr. Patterson as Member of Parliament for Eastern Westmoreland following his expected retirement before the next general elections.

The 42-year-old optometrist was born in Lennox, Westmoreland, and is the nephew of Senator Noel Monteith, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, and Donald Buchanan, Minister of Water and Housing.

Minister Buchanan told The Gleaner that his nephew was a gifted and brilliant academic, was highly accomplished in his professional calling as well as in his political career.

"He was a brilliant strategist and was very committed to the people of eastern Westmoreland. He was looking forward to Parliament as a Member of Parliament and any other duties that came from that appointment," Minister Buchanan stated.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Dr. Buchanan attended Munro College, Manning's School and Wolmer's Boys High school. He is a graduate of the University of Miami, Yale University and the University of California at Berkley. He held a Masters of Science degree in Public Health and operated the Seemore Eye Care in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland.

"Everybody in our family looked to him. We all respected and loved him, so you can understand what we are going through now," Minister Buchanan noted.

Norman Buchanan emerged as a political figure more than 25 years ago as a member of the People's National Party Youth Organisation (PNPYO). He is survived by his wife Judy and three children.
